Flatbed vs. Hook-and-Chain: Why Tow Type Matters

Not all tows are equal. Here's why a flatbed is the safest choice for most modern vehicles.

Flatbed vs. Hook-and-Chain: Why Tow Type Matters

When you call for a tow, the type of truck that shows up can make a real difference to your vehicle. Here's a quick breakdown of the main options and why we lean on flatbeds for most jobs.

Hook-and-chain (the old way)

Older 'sling' style tows lift one end of the vehicle and drag the other two wheels on the road. They're rarely used today because the chains can scratch bumpers and the dragging wheels put stress on the drivetrain.

Wheel-lift towing

A wheel-lift uses a metal yoke under the drive wheels to lift one end of the car. It's gentler than hook-and-chain and works well for short moves and tight spots, but two wheels still roll on the pavement.

Flatbed (the safest standard)

A flatbed—also called a rollback—carries the entire vehicle with all four wheels off the ground. There's no drivetrain wear and far less chance of damage, which makes it ideal for AWD vehicles, EVs, lowered cars, exotics and any non-running vehicle.

Which should you choose?

For most modern vehicles, a flatbed is worth it. At Top Speed Towing & Recovery we run clean hydraulic Jerr-Dan flatbeds and handle everything from daily drivers to luxury cars with the same care.
